New Medicare Cards – Progress Updates

As of August 31, CMS has mailed nearly 35 million new Medicare cards and continues to mail more every day. All mailings to Virginia residents have been completed, so your patients should have their new Medicare cards now. Claims and eligibility requests are being processed with the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI), showing that providers are successfully using the new number.

If someone with Medicare says they didn’t get a card, you should instruct them to:

  • Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) where we can verify their identity, check their address and help them get their new card.
  • Continue to use their current card to get health care services until they get their new card.

People with Medicare should continue to protect their new number to prevent medical identity theft and healthcare fraud. CMS will continue to raise awareness about potential scams and how they can prevent fraud through outreach and a recently-launched national fraud prevention campaign before Medicare Open Enrollment.
