Virginia Department of Health Issues Vaping Advisory

On August 20, 2019, information was sent by Virginia Department of Health regarding a cluster of pulmonary like illnesses linked to e-cigarette use, vaping, or dabbing. Patients reported “vaping” in weeks prior to the onset of respiratory symptoms. Symptoms include: cough, shortness of breath, fever, anorexia, pleuritic chest pain, nausea and diarrhea. Chest x-ray and CT imaging showed diffuse ground-glass opacities.

Clinicians are being asked to inquire about the use of e-cigarette products for vaping from patients that present with respiratory or pulmonary illness, especially of unclear etiology. If the patient discloses using such a product, try to obtain the type used.

Clinicians are encouraged to report cases of significant respiratory illness of unclear etiology and a history of “vaping” or “dabbing” to the local health department:

  • Monday through Friday 8:00am -4:30pm at 540-332-7830
